Alissa Jordan is an anthropologist, filmmaker, writer, and activist born in Big Pine Key, Florida and living in Philadelphia. She is the co-host of “Birthing Resistance: Stories of Hospital Prison” and the host of “Akouchman ak Rezistans: Lòpital Pa Prizon”.
She began confronting hospital detention in mission hospitals in Haiti through the advocacy and activism of Carmelle, a Haitian midwife at MamaBaby Haiti Birth Center in Okap. Carmelle has been speaking out against the practice for years.
Currently, Alissa is the Associate Director of the Center for Experimental Ethnography. CEE is a center for nurturing creative experimentations in research on humanity and society, and for transforming the academic institution as a whole.
She received her Ph.D. from the Department of Anthropology at the University of Florida in 2016, and her dissertation “Atlas of Skins” explores how Haitian women healers, mothers, and others create themselves through healings, and teach children and infants about their bodies, drawing upon the creativity, vitality, and activism of Haitian Vodou ways of being.
Alissa Jordan built this website in conversation with Carmelle Moise, Jean-Denis Aureleus, China Tolliver, and others, to serve as a repository of stories, resistance, and information about hospital-prisons around the globe.
