Hospital Patients Held Hostage for Cash

This is the first piece in a two-story series on hospital detentions that Maria Cheng conducted in 2018, featuring a detailed investigative report on hospital detention in Kenya with photography by Bram Janssen, along with notes from Cheng’s field research on hospital detention in the Phillippines, DRC, India, Malaysia, and Bolivia.

This piece introduces the work of the Center for Reproductive Rights, an international organization that has been active in fighting on behalf of detained patients. It also includes commentary by global research institutes, including the Harvard Global Health Institute, Chatham House (a British think-tank on Universal Health Coverage), the WHO and the CDC, as well as the work of the Center for Reproductive Justice
