Alissa Jordan is an anthropologist, filmmaker, writer, activist born in Big Pine Key, Florida and living in Philadelphia. She is the co-host of “Birthing Resistance: Stories of Hospital Prison” and the host of “Akouchman ak Rezistans: Lòpital Pa Prizon”.
She began confronting hospital detention in mission hospitals in Haiti through the advocacy and activism of Carmelle, a Haitian midwife at MamaBaby Haiti Birth Center in Okap. Carmelle has been speaking out against the practice for years.
Currently, Alissa is a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Pennsylvania, where she is helping to build the Center for Experimental Ethnography. CEE is a center for nurturing creative experimentations in research on humanity and society, and for transforming the academic institution.
She received her Ph.D. from the Department of Anthropology at the University of Florida in 2016, and her dissertation “Atlas of Skins” explores how Haitian women healers, mothers, and others create themselves through healings, and teach children and infants about their bodies, drawing upon the creativity, vitality, and activism of Haitian Vodou ways of being.
Alissa Jordan constructed this website in conversation with Carmelle, China Tolliver, and others, to serve as a repository of stories, resistance, and information about hospital-prisons around the globe.
Li an Kreyòl Ayisyen
Alissa Jordan se yon antwopològ, sineast, ekriven, aktivis ki fèt nan Big Pine Key, Florid ak k ap viv nan Philadelphia. Li se ko-ot di “Birthing Resistance: Stories of Hospital Prison” ak ot di “Akouchman ak Rezistans: Lòpital Pa Prizon”.
Li te kòmanse konfwonte pwoblem nan di detansyon lòpital an misyon yo an Ayiti atravè li pale ak Carmelle, yon fanmsaj ayisyen nan MamaBaby Haiti Birth Center. Carmelle te gen tan pale kont pratik la pou anpil ane nan travay li kou fanm saj.
Kounye la, Alissa se yon parèy post-doktora nan University of Pennsylvania, kote li ap ede bati Sant pou Etnografi eksperimantal. CEE se yon sant pou ankouraje eksperimantasyon kreyatif nan rechèch sou limanite ak sosyete a, ak pou transfòme enstitisyon akademik la.
Li te resevwa Ph.D. li an the Department of Anthropology nan University of Florida nan 2016, ak disètasyon li “Atlas of Skins”. Travay sa eksplore kijan manbo ak moun fey ki fanm geri pwòp tèt yo ak pwòp fanmi yo, sitou lòt fanm, epi kijan yo anseye timoun yo ak tibebe kijan pou pran swen pwòp kò yo. Pwoje a dekri kijan yo fè sa, enspire pa kreyativite a, vitalite a, ak aktivis la entegre nan pratik medikal, espirityèl, ak moral ki rele Vodou Ayisyen.
Alissa Jorden konstwi sit entènèt sa a nan konvèsasyon avèk Carmelle, China Tolliver, ak lòt moun nan pwoje a. Yo imajine ki sit web sa ka sèvi kòm yon depo di istwa, rezistans, ak enfòmasyon sou lopital-prizon yo alantou glòb lan.
